Only You Can Save Mankind by Terry Pratchett

This is actually the first book in the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy, so I figured it might be a good idea to go back and see what happened before Johnny and the Dead! Some people would compare this book to Ender’s Game (by Orson Scott Card) because of the fact that there are video games and battles with aliens. I would like to point out, however, that the aliens in this book are actually IN the game that Johnny is playing (not taking over Earth). They are not a danger to people on Earth; though, the people on Earth are actually threatening the existence of the aliens. Even though it is “just a game” to Johnny and his friends (and, well, every other kid on Earth), the aliens really die when their ships are blown up. Johnny may not be very good at video games, but he knows that something unusual is happening when the captain of the alien fleet surrenders to him. Johnny keeps returning to a spaceship every time he falls asleep, and he soon believes that the aliens are real. All of this is happening at the same time as the “TV war” (the first Gulf War) and the “trying times” (his parents’ marital problems), so it’s easy to see how Johnny’s imagination might be getting the best of him. Is Johnny actually dreaming? Or is he the aliens’ only hope of survival? Find out for yourself…

Happy Reading!
