The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch by Joseph Delaney

I didn’t really know what to expect from this story, since it was something a librarian friend just handed to me. I didn’t even read the summary on the back — I just popped it in and started listening. Well, I thought this book was really cool. It’s all about a 12-year-old kid, Thomas Ward, who is the 7th son of a 7th son and is experiencing difficulties obtaining an apprenticeship. His father has already used up all of his favors getting his other sons settled in some apprenticeships; his mother, nevertheless, planned for this from the time of his birth. She wrote a letter to the local Spook and asked that he take in and teach her son. Dealing with ghosts, boggarts, and witches is not exactly an attractive career, but it is better than nothing. Thomas leaves home with the Spook and ends up, unwittingly, aiding in the release of an evil witch named Mother Malkin. Will the Spook be able to save everyone from Mother Malkin, or was Thomas too helpful to this foe?

Happy Reading!
