The Demon’s Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan

I knew I would love this story as soon as I heard the first two lines:

The pipe under the sink was leaking again. It wouldn’t have been so bad, except that Nick kept his favorite sword under the sink.

Nick and Alan’s father was murdered by some evil magicians, who are still looking for them and their mother, so keeping a sword or two handy is always a good idea.  When Alan gets marked by a demon, Nick has to find a way to remove the mark before it allows Alan to get tracked down and killed.  This description screams “fantasy book,” but it seemed much more like a fast-paced action/adventure story to me.  Think Alex Rider with magic.  The best part?  There is plenty of humor and NO brooding, star-crossed lovers!

Happy Reading!
