The Last Days by Scott Westerfeld

Having already received all the back-story about the vampire parasite and the evil that is bubbling up from underneath the city (via Peeps), this story was free to be a fast-paced, music-filled, journey to toward the impending apocalypse.  New York City is crumbling.  Stray cats and rats are everywhere, and trash collections have become more and more sporadic.  People everywhere are locking themselves up or leaving the city.  Moz and Zahler, though, are still operating as if everything is perfectly normal.  They refuse to let go of their dream of being rock stars — and, suddenly, it looks like it may actually come true!  When a woman throws a vintage strat from the window of her highrise apartment, Moz stumbles upon a girl named Pearl.  After discussing the amazing guitar that just fell from the sky, they decide they should meet up and play together, and then they decide that they should form a band.  Once they recruit an awesome street drummer, Alana Ray, they only need a singer…  Enter Pearl’s friend Minerva [Min].  While Pearl’s connections provide them with a chance at the big time, and Min completes their sound, Min’s recent recovery from a strange illness raises an awful lot of questions.  Alana Ray keeps having disturbing visions every time they play, ans she can’t help but wonder whether she is just imagining things, or if their music is actually affecting something dark and dangerous…
